NECS now has over 322 cell sites documented, and closing in on nearly 1000 photos!
Today I added 13 photos of various Rt 7 Sprint PCS Cell Sites in Vermont, including a Leicester Farm Silo, Brandon Water Tower and Church Steeple, and Middlebury Farm Silo thanks to Geoff and his excellent cell site hunting! Also, added 20 new photos of NH sites for Conway, North Conway (Mount Cranmore), and Mount Washington.

Added 17 new excellent photos of the Grandpa's Knob brodcast TV/FM/Cellular tower from Castleton VT thanks to Geoff. Added the (evolving) Vermont Wireless History information on the Vermont Page thanks to "Mr X". In the news, Unicel gets approval for a barn silo cell site in Cabot Vermont. Need some good cheese? Some big news from a trip I had last week up through both Belnap and Carrol counties of New Hampshire (the Lakes and White Mountains region), I have added EV-DO coverage information for Meredith, Center Harbor, Tamworth, Ossipee, Madison, Conway, North Conway, Glen, and Bartlett. Most notably, EV-DO service is available in ALL THESE TOWNS, even in some of the most remote areas (like Bartlett Village along Rt 302). Also, all of I-89 from Concord to Labanon now has Ev-DO enabled as well. Photos of some of some these NH sites are forthcoming (like the towers from Mt Cranmore in N. Conway, plus a few others). Photos of a Vermont Barn Silo Sprint PCS site coming soon too. Stay tuned.
Also found out that Vodafone UK pre-pay TopUp SIMs will not work on the Unicel network (at least in New Hampshire), but it does work fine on T-Mobile. Lancaster NH now has good Unicel GSM coverage (Thanks to Matt T) due to the recent coverage added at Mt Orne.

Variety of Updates for NH, MA, and VT

With Rural Cellular Co (Unicel) pending a buy out, Verizon will now have almost 100% 850Mhz coverage in New England! This is both good and bed news. Sandown NH, and Andover, MA gets Verizon Wireless cell sites added. Updated Mendon, VT (Pico) information as T-Mobile is not included at that site.
Added 2 new photos for the Nashua NH Rt 111 Stealth Pine Tree for the Verizon and NEXTEL/Sprint antenna panels. Also got to meet and speak briefly with a Verizon Field Engineer out of CT doing work at the site. Not any real good juicy info, but we did talk about the Lucent voice and data equipment that Verizon uses and spares no expense to ensure their network is top-notch. And finally, added 7 new photos of cell towers in Western Mass and CT. Enjoy!

Added 22 new high-resolution photos of cell sites in New Hampshire including a bunch from Downtown Concord (3 carriers), Dunbarton (US Cellular Mono-Pine), and Mont Vernon (Ham Radio Tower with US Cellular and Cingular). In other news, Verizon Wireless EV-DO Rev A service in New Hampshire now extends from Concord up to the BELNAP/GRAFTON County lines (Bristol / New Hampton - Route 104 on Rt 93). For the Fieldtest and Cell Site Hunting Pages on the website, the Casio's Gz'One phone type S was added. Also did some clean up on the information on a variety of cell sites for Vermont. And on a unrelated note, I added a ROIO Trade Page for bootleg music recordings. Enjoy your summer!

EV-DO Rev A Goes Live in Nashua, Hollis, Milford, NH.

Good news finally for you with data plans! It has been confirmed that the Nashua, NH stealth monopole pine tree along Rt 111 near the dump now has EV-DO Rev A service live. Also confirmed that both the Hollis NH Verizon Wireless sites - Hollis Center and Birch Hill are also EV-DO Rev A live.
The Birch Hill cell tower is a "boomer" site which provides service for much of Hollis, Amherst (especially along Rt 101 A), Milford, Brookline, and Mason, NH, so having EV-DO enabled here provides a large data footprint. Other nearby Verizon sites (like West Milford and Amherst's Walnut Hill) have not yet been tested nor confirmed for EV-DO service.

Check out all of these new great photos. Also, updated Verizon Wireless service information for Ely / Fairlee Vermont and for the Lincoln, Franconia and Littleton NH area.

Wireless providers have been rolling their Cell on Wheels (COWs) to Laconia's Weirs Beach for many years, but this year is a bit different. Verzion Wireless finally follows suit with their own COW. Long overdue, this COW will provide badly needed capacity for voice services as well as wireless POS (Point of Sale) equipment. Most vendors along the strip use wireless POS devices for credit card purchase verification. You can read more about the COW by visiting the link. Next week is the 84th annual bike week, so get your motor runnin, head out on the highway, look for adventure, and whetever comes your way! See you up there ;-)

Another update for the Chelmsford MA water tower. It got a facelift last week with 3 new antenna panels installed (per face) for the NEXTEL service. The old decrepid antennas were certainly showing their age! Three new photos showing the old and new antennas have been added. Also, the Nashua, NH stealth monopole pine tree along Rt 111 is now live with Voice 1XRTT service. EV-DO is not yet live at this site.

A couple of updates for Chelmsford MA. The water tower at the intersection of Turnpike Road and Mill Road now has Sprint PCS co-located with Nextel. The BTS for Sprint is located inside the NEXTEL shelter. You should see how fast the power meter is spinning now that both are running off the same power feed! More pictures of this site are coming soon. Also updated the Chelmsford near Kidder Road site (off Rt 110 parallel to Rt 495) as one antenna was removed from the sand and gravel building that it was mounted to.

I manage to confirmed that the Nashua, NH stealth monopole pine tree along Rt 111 near the dump now has Verizon Wireless as the new co-locator with both voice (1XRTT) and data (EV-DO) antenna panels installed, however, the site has not yet gone "live". They are the 2nd tier (row) of antenna panels installed. The first tier is NEXTEL and the 3rd is T-Mobile. Milford NH also has some long awaited news: The new town hall communications tower has finally been erected by US Cellular (it took 6 years to get to this point!). Three new pictures are available.

Wow, it's been that long since the last news update? Asleep at the wheel I'm afraid. Anyways, there's a few updates for April and May. New reports have come in about a Verizon cell site on top of Mt. Ascutney, Vermont. This site is reported to be live and has added a large swath of coverage along I-91 and surrounding towns. Also, the rumor mill is buzzing for new Verizon service in and around Brattleboro, VT, but nothing yet has been confirmed. Anyone in that area please keep your eyes peeled to your phones when they indicate native service. For New Hampshire, a new NEXTEL stealth site is being discussed in Lincoln near Loon Mountain. In Nashua, NH the stealth monopole pine tree along Rt 111 near the Dump now has a 3rd unidentified wireless provider co-located on it. And making some uproar in New England is Wayland, MA and T-Mobile. There's a battle in progress over T-Mobile's new cell site placement proposals in the town.

Got your taxes done yet? Remember, there's one month left until the deadline!! What does that have to do with cell site updates? Nothing really, I just thought a reminder would be a good thing! Anyway, it's been a pretty quiet month for cell tower news in New England. There was a bunch of updates for Verizon's overlay of EV-DO Revision A in NH and in ME, as well as in Burlington Vermont. We also found out that Verizon is installing new dual-band cell sites for other locations in Vermont to take advantage of future EV-DO service (like Killington). I also did a little war driving experiement last month and created a quick portal for my findings (wifi.necellularsites.net). Also, a friend of mine spent a day at Loon Mountain riding and he reported that Verizon still does not have native coverage at Loon, yet downtown Lincoln has VZW PCS native service. That must be a pain in the behind for people when their calls drop between US Cellular and native Verizon service when driving this stretch of road. My guess is that it wont be long until Verizon has service at Loon. Also, got a couple of emails today about wrongful information for Salem. I had it listed under Salem NH when in fact it was for Salem MA. Sorry about that. Also, Lancaster NH now has a new US Cellular (and possibly other carriers?) cell tower on Mt Orne. That's it for now. Be safe, and think spring!

A new page has been added which lists all of New Hampshires Municipal Websites. This makes it easier to look up the Planning and Zoning Board Agenda's and Minutes to determine if new or additional wireless service is bring added to your community. I have been and will continue to make extensive use of this list to help me find existing/upgrading/new service per town, and hopefully it will for you as well. The website Links and FAQ pages have also been updated with this new resource, as well as some general housekeeping. Merry Christmas to everyone!

The web site has been updated with T-Mobile information for the Holman Stadium lights in Nashua, NH. Two of the light poles for the stadium hold PCS antennas. One set for Cingular and the other for T-Mobile. Information was added for a cell tower in Littleton, NH on Pine Hill. Also, a bunch of information has been added regarding native Verizon Wireless coverage in Coventry, Rygate, and Wheelock, Vermont. As a nice resource, the Vermont page of the site now has a bunch of links to various news articles in the Online Edition Archives of the Caledonian Record regarding 'Cell Towers' in Vermont. Enjoy!

Seven new photos of the Nashua NH Route 111 EZ-Mini Storage Facility fake pine tree tower have been added to the website collection of photos. T-Mobile is now co-located and live on this tower, providing badly needed service to the hole between Exit 5 in Nashua and Pepperell MA on Rt 111. This tower was originally erected back in 2001, dismantled and removed in August 2003, and then re-built in October 2004. NEXTEL was the first leasee in April 2005 and now T-Mobile is there as of November 2006. The seven new photos include shots of the new T-Mobile antenna panels, as well as the BTS, cabling, NEXTEL shelter, and power panels.

Cannot Hold Verizon Call between Keene and Nashua, NH

On November 11, 2006, I drove from Keene to Nashua NH while on a call. Not that I expected it to work, and I knew it would drop the call eventually, this is my experience along the Route 101 path.
West of Dublin, Verzion subscribers are on the "Extended Network" - Cellular A band with US Cellular's (USCC) CDMA service. USCC is a roaming partner where your IN network minutes and calling plan minutes still apply (America's Choice plans).
You will be able to maintain a call all the way into Dublin NH (when you traverse the lake and start to come down the hill into Dublin Center). At this point your phone will pick up the faint Verzion native signal coming from Peterborough on the B Cellular band, and will promptly drop your call as per the Preferred Roaming List priority order (native VZW is highest preference priority). You can then re-establish your call (which I did), but then to only momentarily lose the call again as the terrin becomes hilly, losing the Verizon signal and you drop the call just east of Dublin Center. You will pick up USCC's network again (from the tower right there in Dublin on top of the hill where the (now closed) hospital is). You will maintain service on USCC until you start to come down the long hill towards Peterborough, and again the call will drop due to picking up the same, now stronger, VZW signal. From this point onwards you will have native VZW service and can maintain a call all the way to Nashua and beyond.

As of October and November 2006, Verizon is actively searching for new cell sites in downtown Keene in order to activate their PCS "C" license in Cheshire County, but it is unknown if Verizon is also installing new sites along the Route 101 corridor between Keene and Dublin.
Once it is installed, the PCS to Cellular band switch between Peterborough and Dublin will be interesting to see if it ever becomes seamless!

Milford NH Town Hall Cell Site

In year 2000 US Cellular approached the Milford Planning Board to ask about using the downtown Milford (on the oval / Union Square) Town Hall building roof for an additional cell tower. This has turned into a 5+ year plan, and an "all in favor" vote was so moved on September 20, 2005.

In the PB Minutes for November 15, 2005:
US Cellular c/o KJK Wireless and Town of Milford – One Union Sq (Town Hall) – Map 26, Lot 178. Public Hearing for
proposed co-location of 3 cellular antennas on the emergency communications tower located on the roof of the Town Hall and for
the installation of transmission equipment within the attic of the Town Hall. This plan got tabled and then got approved via vote in December 2005.

Here we are in late 2006 and no new equipment yet has been spotted on top of the town hall. I'm still waiting for some new updated information in regards to this.
