Located south west of Rt 495 and the Exit 38 / Route 38 interchange is this monopole which was installed back in 1999/2000 timeframe. This site is off Rt 38 on Phoenix Avenue in the US Postal Service parking lot literally on the Lowell / Tewksbury line. This was an easy site to decipher as it was obvious who were the two carriers from the signs and stickers. Parris Wood writes on 5/15/03: Pic #3, the sign on the right is for Nextel. That's the type of sign they use in the Washington DC area but not in the Richmond VA area.

With a clear shot of Rt 495 near Exit 38 / Route 38 on top of a good sized hill is this water tower which provides a home for 4 wireless providers. Located on Watertower Road off of Astle Road on Route 38 East of 495 is this massive structure. I love that first picture of the profile of the tower with the clouds behind it. The first two pictures were taken from the East side looking west (from Fox Run Drive). You can clearly see wireless providers' arrays on the side perimeter of the tower, dangling down below that perimeter, as well as various commercial service omnidirectional antennas (probably both paging and emergency services). In August of 2004, Mike F. provided
input to confirm that the repeaters for Tewksbury Police and Fire
are present here. The next few pictures show some of the arrays mounted, with some serious elevational downtilt, as well as two microwave dishes. The tower base picture shows three visible base houses for equipment. The far left is Verizon Wireless, the middle old dilapidated one is Cingular, and the one on the right is Sprint PCS. There's another small building in the far back (see next picture) which was inaccessible and is T-Mobiles housing for it's BTS. The Cingular Wireless house probably holds other equipment as well for the other antennas on the tower (as can been somewhat seen from looking at the T-Mobile shack picture, you can see some older coax cables coming out of the Cingular shack that appear to run to those other antennas). Some of the cabling coming out of that old building is not secured to anything and is dangling in a free-form run up to the tower perimeter. You can see where black marks have been left on the legs of the tower from the cabling rubbing against it with the wind over time The next picture shows the warning sign for Cingular Wireless. The next photo shows the warning sign for Verizon Wireless (Bell Atlantic Mobile), site number 166. The next photo shows the power meter for CELL ONE (Cellular One, a.k.a. Cingular Wireless). |
