NOTES:
Wow, what a show! You needed to be here to truly appreciate it! Let me say that The Watchmaker and I surely relished
the opportunity to sit in the 6th row center. This is the closest either of us have been to the Rush stage in our history.
That in itself was incredible - to have Alex, Geddy and occasionally Neil looking in our direction and making eye contact
from time to time. Priceless!
A good performance for sure. I'd say they have worked out most kinks in the production in this tour so far. Although not as
tight as they could have been at a couple of places, still a stellar performance. I think they came off their "high" of
playing their homeland for the few shows prior to this one. That probably had an influence.
There are a few moments where the crowd gets extra loud or some people yell, but they are only brief in nature.
The Watchmaker and I regularly switched seats to allow him to see better when people in front of us shifted.
Just prior to the encore, Alex and Geddy toss t-shirts out into the crowd. One of them came right to me and I went to grab it
but the guy infront of me got it. He put the shirt on and many were laughing and trying to take pictures of it, so that
broke a few seconds of the beginning of La Villa up. The shirt said "GeFilter" on the front, and "My sausage is better than yours" on the back.
MASTERING NOTES:
What can I say. This is probably the best capture to date in my stealth repetoire. If you can rise above the mild talkers, occasional excited fans, and some mild singers in this recording, IMHO, is quite stellar.
It captures great sound right under and directly between both speaker stacks.
The profound part is the stereo separation that one gets at this position on the floor.
Truly great if you appreciate having two distinct ears.
Specific stereo moments include the beginning of Vital Signs. The Keyboards, guitar and drums regularly have stereo artifacts that are captured here for your enjoyment. Love that!
You also may notice some phase shifting between left and right. This is mostly due to my slight movement during shows. Standing
as still as possible with everyone airdrumming and slamming to and fro around you is a challenge in and of itself.
Note that this is the raw recording - no EQ. Only hard limiting was performed on explosions (0dB), and a 3dB boost via the loudness maximizer plug-in from iZotope Ozone 4. What my ears heard is what you hear here.
I'm really glad I recently upgraded from CSB to CA mics. Less boom and more quality. Thanks to Chris at CA for finally getting this pair of cards done for me after he was sick for a while. Patience is always a virtue and so is thinking of lead time!
I want to thank my son - now known as The Watchmaker [apprentice]. This was his 2nd Rush show and hopefully, again, not his last. He's learning the taping trade. His careful eye and assistance was key to ensuring a great capture this night.
We always need more caffeine!
And we must note for the archives that we sing "Chasing them Chipmunks" sometimes to the "Working them Angels" lyrics. We
have a 6 year old Australian Border Collie at home named Angel who always chases chipmunks. She is cool. She is always working
herself too hard!
The title for this release came from the fact that Mohegan Sun was the venue, and that my son chose 'The Watchmaker' for his
new screen name. As you know, the Watchmaker is part of the lyrics from Bu2B. Melding these two major themes together, this
title came to mind and we stuck with it. Lit only by Fire was added as an afterthought.
Also, we have a standing gentleman’s' bet that eventually a ROIO release for this tour will come out entitled "I Can't Stop Drinking Beer" as a twist on "I Can't Stop Thinking Big" from Caravan lyrics. Any takers? No credit needed either way if you use that title, and no skin off of either of our backs ;-)
ARTWORK:
I got in touch with Nephronic Design a few weeks before this show after I have been viewing his fancy artistic hand for years. After seeing the artwork for the 2010-06-29 - Live in Albuquerque (SUN-CDR-037) release, I was convinced to ask him for help, which gratefully, he obliged and quickly turned out the brilliant work you see here. Thank you Michael!
PHOTOS:
A special thanks for the permission to include the very nice photos from kbomb106, brucknerdoc, shagrath5, and others (remaining anonymous) within this collection ;-)
THANKS:
Special thanks to all at TRF foks for the hookup @ the waterfall bar prior to the show.
A hello goes out to LakesideMaiden and Der Trommler and Spike!
