Notes / Tapers Notes:
- Notes -
Well what a fine evening to have this jazz phenom visit us in Boston. A nearly sold out show on a nearly
perfect evening in June. A friend from work turned me on to Melody, and though I am not a jazz
follower, her music is quite attractive and brings some calmness and serenity to a turbulent world.
Lord knows we need more peace. So, with an open mind, I went to the show and am glad I did.
Having already listened to her albums and two FM broadcasts of her shows from 2009 in Paris and Japan, I
was well prepared to enjoy those songs again, plus some new twists on the old "hit" songs.
She kinda crossed a bit more into the "pop" genre a bit with this performance. Brought to my attention
was the fact that her old band "feel" is gone and she has a new lineup for this tour. Talented by all means,
they put on a great show. I just wished that the house sound (or the mixing, really) at the Wilbur Theater
was more up to snuff. Unfortunately, Melody's vocals were too far down in the mix most times, and
Overpowering were the other instruments.
At the end of the show, I got a copy of the set list from the stage. I'm including a scan of it in this release,
along with a scan of the ticket stub. Some of the ordering of the set is different from the scan. For
example, Les Etoiles is early in the set, and she did not perform Somewhere Over the Rainbow as part of
the encore. I think that was because it was pretty darn hot in the theater for the entire show. The A/C
needs to also be upgraded!
~ Tapers Notes ~
IMHO - This is best listened to with a good pair of headphones...
Okay, I admit, I set my bar pretty high these days in terms of sound quality, and the most unfortunate part
of this recording is that 1) the house sound & mix was pretty poor, and 2) my seat was not great for
acoustics. When we got the tickets, they were believed to be "third row" from the stage but it turned out
they were in the balcony. So, there's A LOT of "roominess" to this recording. Out of a perfect score of
10, I would give it a 6. You may beg to differ, and hopefully you enjoy it regardless.
The title for this came from her performance of "My One and Only Thrill" where she tells us to only snap
our fingers (instead of clapping) at the end of the song. The audience jumped the gun and snapped before
the song was over. She comments and asks "Will You Like Me To Continue?"... "Are you sure? The thing is
that if you do it twice... it's kinds like you get two songs in one". Then she continues on ;-)
I used no EQ for this mix, it's raw right from my brand new CA-14 cardioids. I did have to boost the levels
in mastering a good amount because I was low in my gain setting. Soft limiting via iZotope Ozone 4's
"Loudness Maximizer" was used to reduce audience clapping using a smooth transition setting.
I also removed a bit of the audience between the last song and the encore.
I hope you enjoy this and please share in lossless formats and remember to seed, liberate the bootlegs,
and keep free trade alive!

Track 13 -> 2010-06-02 - T13 - Melody Gardot - Boston - Post show Discussion with Dave and Mike.mp3
This track is NOT included in the lossless FLAC release version, but is only included here for historical purposes.
The two if us who attended the show have a discussion about the performance and, more specifically,we were
disappointed with the sound quality and how Melody's vocals were too far down in the mix. We left the theater
via a second floor exit which led directly to the street. We had a few minute discussion there and then went back
into the theater to see if we could get a hold of one of the stage set lists. I managed to come away with a set
list (see below for the JPG scan). We then went back outside and continue to discuss the show
as we walked to our car. Not that there is anything really juicy in the conversation, but it's included here as a historic
momento of the evening. Enjoy!
