Keene Verizon Wireless
Service
Last Updated January 17. 2007
As we know, Verizon is actively building out their PCS C Band network in the Keeene area, but none of that network is yet "live". On Jan 12, Robert W. emailed and wrote:
While in Keene the other day I was messing in the service menu on
my VX8100.
Verizon has a PCS license in the C block in this area. I
changed band preference to PCS only.
My phone intermittantly locked onto a Verizon Wireless signal
on SID
28, channel 1100. From my research this channel is in the PCS
C
Block.
Verizon would be the only PCS Provider in the current PRL for
this area.
US Cellular is 850 in this area.
By intermittant I mean for maybe a period of two seconds every
few
minutes, very easy to miss it if you're not looking for it.
I would assume that they are testing their new equipment put
up near
walmart, at a baseball field used by KSC.

You Can't Hold a Call From Keene to Nashua
on Verizon
Last Updated November 13, 2006
On November 11, 2006, I drove from Keene to Nashua NH while on a call.
Not that I expected it to work, and I knew it would drop the call eventually,
this is my experience along the Route 101 path.
West of Dublin, Verzion subscribers are on the "Extended Network" -
Cellular A band with US Cellular's (USCC) CDMA service.
USCC is a roaming partner where your IN network minutes and calling plan
minutes still apply (America's Choice plans).
You will be able to maintain a call all the way into Dublin NH (when you
traverse the lake and start to come down the hill into Dublin Center).
At this point your phone will pick up the faint Verzion native signal coming
from Peterborough on the B Cellular band, and will promptly drop your call
as per the Preferred Roaming List priority order (native VZW is highest
preference priority). You can then re-establish your call (which I did),
but then to only momentarily lose the call again as the terrain becomes
hilly, losing the Verizon signal and you drop the call just east
of Dublin Center. You will pick up USCC's network again (from the tower
right there in Dublin on top of the hill where the (now closed) hospital
is). You will maintain service on USCC until you start to come down the
long hill towards Peterborough, and again the call will drop due to picking
up the same, now stronger, VZW signal. From this point onwards you will
have native VZW service and can maintain a call all the way to Nashua and
beyond.
As of October and November 2006, Verizon is actively searching for new
cell sites in downtown Keene in order to activate their PCS "C" license
in Cheshire County, but it is unknown if Verizon is also installing new
sites along the Route 101 corridor between Keene and Dublin.
Once it is installed, the PCS to Cellular band switch between Peterborough
and Dublin will be interesting to see if it ever becomes seamless!
North Country NH Service
Verzion, Cingular, and Unicel
Last Updated August 28, 2007
VERIZON
The Mount Washington Hotel pretty much has no wireless providers present
yet, but they are coming!
US Cellular on the A Band was the only provider that could be detected
(August 28, 2007).
Unicel GSM could not be picked up / detected at this location. Maybe
it was my phone?
Verizon continues
to look at the Twin Mountain area for network buildout. View the link
for Twin
Mountain for
more information.
Verzion native 1900Mhz Enhanced Services (1XRTT) coverage
now goes way up Rt 93 to Littleton, NH.
As of February 15, 2007-2008 Verizon has 1900MHz coverage along Rt 93 in Lincoln, NH, but at the base of Loon Mountain, they do not have native service yet (US Cellular 800Mhz Extended Network service is there).
Update August 28, 2007:
EV-DO Service is now live in Belnap and Carrol counties
of NH (Lakes Region and WHite Mountains region), as well as along I-89
from Concord to Lebanon, and also in Peterborough, NH.
Verzion is now offering EV-DO Rev A coverage from Concord NH to BELNAP/GRAFTON
County lines (Bristol / New Hampton - Route 104 on Rt 93).
Verizon also now has 1XRTT service extending up to Littleton NH. Franconia,
Sugar Hill, Bethlehem, and Littleton, NH now have native Verizon service.
There is a new cell tower on Rt 93 at the Franconia / Sugar Hill town
line (Mile marker 118), and it has been confirmed that two new cell
sites in Littleton also exist. Verizon is planning to expand it's service
in Bethlehem sometime in 2007 along Rt 302 (and eventually extend that
service into the Twin Mountain/Carrol area).
Read the press release for this new coverae here.
Helpful Hints for Verizon Customers
when travelling in this area:
If you are in the Lincoln, Franconia, Littleton area, Verizon service
is mainly along Rt 93. If you venture off that path, you will eventually
have such poor service that you cannot make or receive a call. Manually
forcing your phone to change bands (change from "Any" to "Cell Only" will cause
it to change to the US Cellular Extended Network partner and you will have
better coverage for voice calls (and save your battery life).
On most phones, changing bands requires you to access the password protected
portion of the menus to get to the "Services" section where you can change
bands. Each phone is different, so please consult an online forum (like
HowardForums or WirelessAdvisor to see how this is done; please don't email
me!).
When you are on
a call between New Hampton and Plymouth on Rt 93 (town of Ashland is
the switchover) using Verizon Wireless, you may experience a call drop
in this zone as the phone needs to switch from the Cellular B band to
the PCS C band (850Mhz <-> 1900Mhz),
or vice versa. VZW performs a
HARD HANDOFF to try and accomplish this, but it does not always work
in this area.
CINGULAR
Cingular has 1900Mhz coverage all the way up 93 until Bristol / New Hampton.
It then switches to Cingular Wireless service all the way up to Lincoln
/ Woodstock.
UNICEL
Unicel has GSM coverage in Lincoln / Woodstock as network
310-890, which fades at Franconia Notch and then returns after the Notch
and continues up beyond Littleton NH. They have excellent coverage in
Bethlehem NH. My Cingular (formerly AT&T)
unlocked Palm Treo worked fine for all voice and GPRS (Data Services).
Placing voice calls, accessing the internet with my browser and sending
receiving SMS text messages worked fine.
In November 2006, Unicel has added over 30 new GSM cell sites to the
Lakes Region of New Hampshire, bringing the total of Cell Sites they
have in New Hampshire to over 66.
The improvements are part of the company’s $5 million investment
in central and eastern New Hampshire.
Of the 30 new cell sites that have been built, Unicel has added six that
provide wireless services to recreational areas including Attitash, Black
Mountain, Bretton Woods, Gunstock, Mt. Cranmore and Tenney Mountain (in
Plymouth).
The full list of 30 new Unicel cell sites includes:
• Albany (2 sites)
• Alton
• Bartlett Village
• Bartlett (at Attitash Ski Area)
• Bretton Woods / Mount Washington Hotel
• Conway (3 sites)
• Conway (at Mt. Cranmore Ski Area)
• Gilford (at Gunstock Ski Area)

• North Conway
• Ossipee (3 sites)

Cell Sites for Ashland, NH:
Updated Information from July 18, 2006. Thanks to Marshall for this update!!
A new tower is up with two carriers, US Cellular and Verizon. It is believed that this tower is located off Rt 3 in the swampy areas (as described below).
Old news:
No cell sites reported yet in Ashland, other than this news found from the Citizen
Online (www.citizen.com) from June 9, 2005:
Work is underway for a proposed Verizon cellular telephone tower in the town’s
outskirts located in the swampy areas, far from any residential areas, off Route
3.

Although no photos are present, the monopole located
at Rt 101 and Rt 28 rotary in Auburn contains Verizon Wireless as one
of the providers.
The Route 28 SOUTH stretch after the lake to the Derry

Cell Sites for Barrington, NH:
On Garnett Road is a lattice tower with at least
three wireless providers co-0located. Cingular is one of them, as this tower
is owned by Cingular.
As of July 2007-2008 Verizon Wireless has announced that they now are offering service
in Rockingham and Strafford Countiesvia two new cell sites.
The new sites in Barrington and Northwood increase coverage and capacity along
Routes 4 and 202, as well the surrounding area.
Got any more info or photos? Please let me know! Thanks!
Cell Sites for Bath, NH:
No usable and reliable wireless service is available in Bath.
If you get a +3dBi (or better) external magnet mount antenna attached to
your phone, and you are in a decent place in town (along many parts of
Rt 302), you *may* be able to pick up usable CDMA
digital service from both US Cellular and Verizon (from the i91 corridor
service on the NH / VT border).

Located at the Bedford Safety Complex at the intersection of Rt 101 and 114 is this monopole-like tower. It has been here for many years, and was originally used for emergency services communication antennas. Over the years I have watched this tower become populated with the various carriers as well as the original set of emergency services antennas. The lowest wireless carrier is most likely Cingular as this array was installed during the big boom time of Suncom's network a few years back. The array above it is very new - within the last year of 2002-2003. Top two most antennas are unknown, but probably Nextel and Sprint PCS. The second array has a really funky curved arms. As of Late Fall 2006 and confirmed on January 1, 2007-2008 Verizon
Wireless now has a cell tower (the only cell tower known to exist
in Franconia) located along Rt 93 at mile marker 118 (on the
Franconia / Sugar Hill town line). It's a lattice type tower
with a large microwave dish mounted on it (facing towards Mount
Lafayette, Cannon Mountain), and one set of sectorized panel
antennas (for 1900 MHz PCS 1XRTT service). No other carriers
were present on the tower.
With my limited field test, service from this tower was established
(going north) near echo lake at the base of Cannon, and was held
all the way into Bethlehem NH when new service from a Littleton
tower was picked up. Going south, the same behavior was noticed.
US Cellular and Unicel also has service eminating from Mt Agaziz
in Bethlehem which provides fringe service to Franconia and Sugar
Hill.
No other carriers are known to exist yet in either Franconia
or Sugar Hill. If anyone has better information, please let me
know.

Thanks to Jon A of Grantham NH for this info! I reviewed the town minutes (again),
and found something I had actually read before. US Cellular
was applying for permits to build a "tree"
tower, around 150', off Rt. 10 in Grantham. Last word
was in April, the board approved the site plan but there
looked like some possible legal action from an abutter
concerning R.O.W. width and land use. Verizon apparently
also is doing the same on Rt. 114 in Grantham. Hope
this contributes to your site. |

Cell Sites for Greenfield
NH:
Greenfield has a US Cellular site on top of Crotched Mountain.
Also, sometime early in 2006, Verizon Wireless installed a
site just north of Greenfield State Park. The tower is visible
from the South part of the lake. Coverage is excellent close
to the park, but a mile or more in any direction from the park,
your coverage is fringed.
If anyone has other coverage information for Greenfield, please
let me know!

Henniker is host to Pat's Peak Ski Area. This mountain has a
cell tower on it with 4 carriers (as of December 2006). The carriers
on the tower are US Cellular, Verizon, Sprint, and NEXTEL.
Henniker seems to have hit-or-miss Cingular
service (as of December 2006). Unknown where the tower for them
are located.

My personal favorite, the Bell Atlantic tower on top of Birch Hill in Hollis, NH. Located at the corner of Hollis, Brookline, and Milford, NH, this tower has an altitude of about 800 feet above sea level. It's visible from many locations in southern NH (like from Rt 3 North in the S curve in Nashua between exits 2 and 4 - looking west, as well as from Rt 101A in Amherst NH in front of Wallmart if you look to the South West). This tower was constructed in 2000 and was in service in 2001. It was made to look like a fire watchtower per requirements of the town of Hollis. UPDATED JULY 1 2004: Cingular Wireless is now co-located on this tower. UPDATED SEPTEMBER 8,
2004: Cingular Wireless GSM is now live at this
site. Click the image to see many more detailed pictures of this cell site. |

September 2005: Verizon Wireless is
now co-located on this site with both 800Mhz and EV-DO PCS antenna
panels. U.S. Cellular erected this tower back in the early to mid 1990's. Amateur radio repeaters for the 2M, 440MHz, and 220MHz are also co-located on this tower for the N1IMO-N1IMN repeater system, as well as multiple commercial repeater antennas. Cell Sites for Hopkinton NH:
This information was found on the 'net via the electronic January 3, 2002 version of the BOW TIMES newspaper.
HOPKINTON Construction is expected to begin soon on two new cell
towers, each designed to blend with its surroundings.
During its December meeting, the planning board approved plans for a
90-foot silo tower for U.S. Cellular, to be located at 845 Upper Straw
Road.
The board also approved plans for a 110-foot camouflaged tree tower
for Sprint on Sugar Hill Road.

On Monday June 30th, Scott C writes: This cell site is in Hudson, in an industrial park, near Park Ave and Clement Rd just off Rt 111. USCC is the only carrier I can say for sure is on it. Their antenna is at the top and has considerable downtilt. This site is not far from the county line and unfortunately it makes things tough for Cingular customers in Windham who frequently will pick up that tower instead. That site was put in three or four years ago. The two down tilted antennas are facing in the direction of Rockingham County and would be an effort to reduce signal strength on the other side of the border. The other antennas appear to be
pcs antennas as they are smaller than the cellular array at the
top. |

Located at the Hudson Community Church on Central Street in the Church Steeple is a PCS array. I saw them install it some years ago (back in 1998 or so). The photo here is from the inside of the church showing some of the antenna cabling. The BTS has yet to be located but it can't be very far from this wire! |
