Keene Verizon Wireless Service

Last Updated January 17. 2007

As we know, Verizon is actively building out their PCS C Band network in the Keeene area, but none of that network is yet "live". On Jan 12, Robert W. emailed and wrote:

While in Keene the other day I was messing in the service menu on my VX8100.
Verizon has a PCS license in the C block in this area.  I changed band preference to PCS only.

My phone intermittantly locked onto a Verizon Wireless signal on SID
28, channel 1100.  From my research this channel is in the PCS C Block.

Verizon would be the only PCS Provider in the current PRL for this area.

US Cellular is 850 in this area.

By intermittant I mean for maybe a period of two seconds every few minutes, very easy to miss it if you're not looking for it.

I would assume that they are testing their new equipment put up near walmart, at a baseball field used by KSC.

You Can't Hold a Call From Keene to Nashua on Verizon
Last Updated November 13, 2006

On November 11, 2006, I drove from Keene to Nashua NH while on a call. Not that I expected it to work, and I knew it would drop the call eventually, this is my experience along the Route 101 path.
West of Dublin, Verzion subscribers are on the "Extended Network" - Cellular A band with US Cellular's (USCC) CDMA service. USCC is a roaming partner where your IN network minutes and calling plan minutes still apply (America's Choice plans).
You will be able to maintain a call all the way into Dublin NH (when you traverse the lake and start to come down the hill into Dublin Center). At this point your phone will pick up the faint Verzion native signal coming from Peterborough on the B Cellular band, and will promptly drop your call as per the Preferred Roaming List priority order (native VZW is highest preference priority). You can then re-establish your call (which I did), but then to only momentarily lose the call again as the terrain becomes hilly, losing the Verizon signal and you drop the call just east of Dublin Center. You will pick up USCC's network again (from the tower right there in Dublin on top of the hill where the (now closed) hospital is). You will maintain service on USCC until you start to come down the long hill towards Peterborough, and again the call will drop due to picking up the same, now stronger, VZW signal. From this point onwards you will have native VZW service and can maintain a call all the way to Nashua and beyond.

As of October and November 2006, Verizon is actively searching for new cell sites in downtown Keene in order to activate their PCS "C" license in Cheshire County, but it is unknown if Verizon is also installing new sites along the Route 101 corridor between Keene and Dublin.
Once it is installed, the PCS to Cellular band switch between Peterborough and Dublin will be interesting to see if it ever becomes seamless!

North Country NH Service

Verzion, Cingular, and Unicel

Last Updated August 28, 2007

VERIZON

The Mount Washington Hotel pretty much has no wireless providers present yet, but they are coming!
US Cellular on the A Band was the only provider that could be detected (August 28, 2007).
Unicel GSM could not be picked up / detected at this location. Maybe it was my phone?

Verizon continues to look at the Twin Mountain area for network buildout. View the link for Twin Mountain for more information.

Verzion native 1900Mhz Enhanced Services (1XRTT) coverage now goes way up Rt 93 to Littleton, NH.

As of February 15, 2007-2008 Verizon has 1900MHz coverage along Rt 93 in Lincoln, NH, but at the base of Loon Mountain, they do not have native service yet (US Cellular 800Mhz Extended Network service is there).

Update August 28, 2007:

EV-DO Service is now live in Belnap and Carrol counties of NH (Lakes Region and WHite Mountains region), as well as along I-89 from Concord to Lebanon, and also in Peterborough, NH.

Verzion is now offering EV-DO Rev A coverage from Concord NH to BELNAP/GRAFTON County lines (Bristol / New Hampton - Route 104 on Rt 93).

Verizon also now has 1XRTT service extending up to Littleton NH. Franconia, Sugar Hill, Bethlehem, and Littleton, NH now have native Verizon service. There is a new cell tower on Rt 93 at the Franconia / Sugar Hill town line (Mile marker 118), and it has been confirmed that two new cell sites in Littleton also exist. Verizon is planning to expand it's service in Bethlehem sometime in 2007 along Rt 302 (and eventually extend that service into the Twin Mountain/Carrol area).

Read the press release for this new coverae here.

Helpful Hints for Verizon Customers when travelling in this area:

If you are in the Lincoln, Franconia, Littleton area, Verizon service is mainly along Rt 93. If you venture off that path, you will eventually have such poor service that you cannot make or receive a call. Manually forcing your phone to change bands (change from "Any" to "Cell Only" will cause it to change to the US Cellular Extended Network partner and you will have better coverage for voice calls (and save your battery life).
On most phones, changing bands requires you to access the password protected portion of the menus to get to the "Services" section where you can change bands. Each phone is different, so please consult an online forum (like HowardForums or WirelessAdvisor to see how this is done; please don't email me!).

When you are on a call between New Hampton and Plymouth on Rt 93 (town of Ashland is the switchover) using Verizon Wireless, you may experience a call drop in this zone as the phone needs to switch from the Cellular B band to the PCS C band (850Mhz <-> 1900Mhz), or vice versa. VZW performs a HARD HANDOFF to try and accomplish this, but it does not always work in this area.

CINGULAR

Cingular has 1900Mhz coverage all the way up 93 until Bristol / New Hampton. It then switches to Cingular Wireless service all the way up to Lincoln / Woodstock.

UNICEL

Unicel has GSM coverage in Lincoln / Woodstock as network 310-890, which fades at Franconia Notch and then returns after the Notch and continues up beyond Littleton NH. They have excellent coverage in Bethlehem NH. My Cingular (formerly AT&T) unlocked Palm Treo worked fine for all voice and GPRS (Data Services). Placing voice calls, accessing the internet with my browser and sending receiving SMS text messages worked fine.

In November 2006, Unicel has added over 30 new GSM cell sites to the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, bringing the total of Cell Sites they have in New Hampshire to over 66.
The improvements are part of the company’s $5 million investment in central and eastern New Hampshire.
Of the 30 new cell sites that have been built, Unicel has added six that provide wireless services to recreational areas including Attitash, Black Mountain, Bretton Woods, Gunstock, Mt. Cranmore and Tenney Mountain (in Plymouth).

The full list of 30 new Unicel cell sites includes:

• Albany (2 sites)
• Alton
• Bartlett Village
• Bartlett (at Attitash Ski Area)
• Bretton Woods / Mount Washington Hotel
• Conway (3 sites)
• Conway (at Mt. Cranmore Ski Area)
• Gilford (at Gunstock Ski Area)

• Meredith (2 sites)
• Moultonborough
• North Conway
• Ossipee (3 sites)

Cell Sites for Ashland, NH:

Updated Information from July 18, 2006. Thanks to Marshall for this update!!

A new tower is up with two carriers, US Cellular and Verizon. It is believed that this tower is located off Rt 3 in the swampy areas (as described below).

Old news:

No cell sites reported yet in Ashland, other than this news found from the Citizen Online (www.citizen.com) from June 9, 2005:

Work is underway for a proposed Verizon cellular telephone tower in the town’s outskirts located in the swampy areas, far from any residential areas, off Route 3.

Cell Sites for Auburn, NH:

Although no photos are present, the monopole located at Rt 101 and Rt 28 rotary in Auburn contains Verizon Wireless as one of the providers.

The Route 28 SOUTH stretch after the lake to the Derry rotary has very poor coverage for every wireless provider.

Know of changed information regarding this? Please le me know so I can post it!

Cell Sites for Barrington, NH:

On Garnett Road is a lattice tower with at least three wireless providers co-0located. Cingular is one of them, as this tower is owned by Cingular.

As of July 2007-2008 Verizon Wireless has announced that they now are offering service in Rockingham and Strafford Countiesvia two new cell sites. The new sites in Barrington and Northwood increase coverage and capacity along Routes 4 and 202, as well the surrounding area.

Got any more info or photos? Please let me know! Thanks!

Cell Sites for Bath, NH:

No usable and reliable wireless service is available in Bath.
If you get a +3dBi (or better) external magnet mount antenna attached to your phone, and you are in a decent place in town (along many parts of Rt 302), you *may* be able to pick up usable CDMA digital service from both US Cellular and Verizon (from the i91 corridor service on the NH / VT border).

Located at the Bedford Safety Complex at the intersection of Rt 101 and 114 is this monopole-like tower. It has been here for many years, and was originally used for emergency services communication antennas. Over the years I have watched this tower become populated with the various carriers as well as the original set of emergency services antennas.

The lowest wireless carrier is most likely Cingular as this array was installed during the big boom time of Suncom's network a few years back.

The array above it is very new - within the last year of 2002-2003.

Top two most antennas are unknown, but probably Nextel and Sprint PCS. The second array has a really funky curved arms. Sexy!! :-)

Thanks to Don R. of Manchester, this tower appears to be very close to the Plymouth / Campton line. In July 2005, he states:

Here's a photo of a Cell Tower that I usually see whenever I drive up north. It's visible from I-93 at Exit 26. I believe it's just far north enough of the Plymouth, NH town line that I think it's to be considered in the town line of Campton, NH. If in fact it is in the town line of Campton,NH - then it's very close to Mt. Pero - which is not a huge mountain with a highly publicized name.

There is another tower in Candia off 27 on the top of the hill. Cingular is on that tower. The site has very good coverage except to the west where it seems to have been toned down to avoid interference with USCC. The amps setup channel last I knew was 328. It used to be 315 put when Cingular put up their site in Topsfield MA, the new topsfield site took the setup
channel Candia was using and candia got a new channel. That was in the old days of a noise, rather than interference limited system.

?

Candia Rt 101 Cell Site 2

Located just north west, immediately off the highway is this PCS tower. Also located at exit 3 route 43. This tower was erected back in the 2000 / 2001 timeframe.

You can see this carriers is using a microwave link probably to relay the voice streams back to another tower which has easier access to a back haul to the MTSO.

Parris Wood writes on 5/16/03:

The microwave dish is a backhaul but not really for back hauling to the MTSO. Sprint PCS has a two site point to point link for helping
with the hand off between the two sites. Triton PCS (SunCom) uses this setup a
several sites along the rural parts of I-64 going from Richmond VA to Charlottesville NC. Literally a connect the dot scenario. That being said your idea is also correct. Sprint PCS uses a microwave shot to connect their sole NE North Carolina site (a few hundred feet over the Va/NC line) back to a site in Va Beach with local T-1 access. Generally,
almost all sites now have T-1 connections. I've been to many rural sites and even
those had a copper pair connecting the site to the PTSN.

Exeter Rt 101 Cell Site 2

Located on Rt 101 at Exit 12 is this tower just to the north of the highway. Three obvious carriers present, and the dual-polarized antennas (3rd down from top) is also probably a wireless phone carrier as well,as it has the 120-degree separation of antennas, plus this locale is quite rural.

On 5/16/03 Parris Wood writes:

The 3rd set of antenna are probably analog or digital omnidirectional antenna. I've seen CellularOne (Cingular) do this at
one site as well as Alltel. Now Alltel is busy converting most of their omnidirectional sites to sectorized ones but the first part of the
process is digitizing the cell. That maybe the case here.

Cell Sites for Sugar Hill, NH:

No photo's as of yet (got any?, please pass them along!).

As of Late Fall 2006 and confirmed on January 1, 2007-2008 Verizon Wireless now has a cell tower (the only cell tower known to exist in Franconia) located along Rt 93 at mile marker 118 (on the Franconia / Sugar Hill town line). It's a lattice type tower with a large microwave dish mounted on it (facing towards Mount Lafayette, Cannon Mountain), and one set of sectorized panel antennas (for 1900 MHz PCS 1XRTT service). No other carriers were present on the tower.
With my limited field test, service from this tower was established (going north) near echo lake at the base of Cannon, and was held all the way into Bethlehem NH when new service from a Littleton tower was picked up. Going south, the same behavior was noticed.

US Cellular and Unicel also has service eminating from Mt Agaziz in Bethlehem which provides fringe service to Franconia and Sugar Hill.

No other carriers are known to exist yet in either Franconia or Sugar Hill. If anyone has better information, please let me know.

Cell Sites for Franklin NH :

No photo's yet, but this info was found (on June 9, 2005) while surfing:

U.S. Cellular is proposing to build a150-foot monopole tower on private land on Central Street.

also...

US Cellular installed antennae on a water tower in Franklin around year 2000.
It's located on a hilltop overlooking downtown near the middle school.
This antenna puts the only decent signal over downtown Franklin.

Thanks to Jim M. of NH for this above info (September 15, 2005)!

Also, it is known that Verizon has pretty poor coverage in downtown Franklin.
Cingular has pretty good outdoor GSM coverage in Franklin.

Thanks to Jon A of Grantham NH for this info!

I reviewed the town minutes (again), and found something I had actually read before. US Cellular was applying for permits to build a "tree" tower, around 150', off Rt. 10 in Grantham. Last word was in April, the board approved the site plan but there looked like some possible legal action from an abutter concerning R.O.W. width and land use. Verizon apparently also is doing the same on Rt. 114 in Grantham. Hope this contributes to your site.

My personal favorite, the Bell Atlantic tower on top of Birch Hill in Hollis, NH. Located at the corner of Hollis, Brookline, and Milford, NH, this tower has an altitude of about 800 feet above sea level. It's visible from many locations in southern NH (like from Rt 3 North in the S curve in Nashua between exits 2 and 4 - looking west, as well as from Rt 101A in Amherst NH in front of Wallmart if you look to the South West).

This tower was constructed in 2000 and was in service in 2001. It was made to look like a fire watchtower per requirements of the town of Hollis.

This cell site is in Hudson, in an industrial park, near Park Ave and Clement Rd just off Rt 111. USCC is the only carrier I can say for sure is on it. Their antenna is at the top and has considerable downtilt. This site is not far from the county line and unfortunately it makes things tough for Cingular customers in Windham who frequently will pick up that tower instead. That site was put in three or four years ago. The two down tilted antennas are facing in the direction of Rockingham County and would be an effort to reduce signal strength on the other side of the border.

The other antennas appear to be pcs antennas as they are smaller than the cellular array at the top.

Cell Sites for Lancaster NH

On Saturday March 11, 2007-2008 we were notifed by email here at the NECS Web Site that Lancster now has a new cell tower in town.

Looking at the Lancaster town web site and the Planning Board minutes, it can be seen that US Cellular was approved to install equipment on a tower (between 170' and 189' tall). Apparently the tower is located on or near Mt Orne.

In August 2007, Matt T. of Lancaster emailed and stated that Unicel GSM service is now live and well at this new Mt Orne cell site. Matt states:
I just tried out my phone for the first time with the new Unicel service. It's pretty good. There are a few areas on the other side of a mountain where I don't get service, but it's pretty good coverage. Unicel has co-located on the tower with US Cellular on the new Mt. Orne cell tower.

In July 2007, Matt T. also said that Unicel GSM service is also coming to the same US Cellular cell tower located near Mt Orne.
Matt writes "According to the July 6, 2007 edition of the Lancaster Herald newspaper Unicel will begin installation of the cellular equipment on July 14th. They assume that within two weeks (the end of July) the area will have GSM cellular access. With this new service coming, Unicel, AT&T/Cingular, and T-Mobile customers will all get service. "
He goes onto say...

"Lancaster has only approved one single tower, so the word on the street is that Unicel is going up on the same tower. They're looking at rigging companies right now to get the equipment up there, as right now it's just sitting on a truck at the cell site.

I hear that there are even plans to put up a wireless internet service up there so that rural high speed capacity can increase. It will be part of a network that stretches from Littleton to Colebrook, and from Berlin to Island Pond, Vermont. They're hoping it increases revenue for the area, and will allow some bigger businesses to enter the area to start business. Right now the lack of high speed internet is really a bummer for businesses. A lot of the organizations that require high-speed internet can only get moderate DSL speeds. Having the tower will expand this high speed area and allow more subscribers to get service
. "

The family and I took the Cog up to the top on Tuesday August 21, 2007-2008 and snapped off some photos while there. It was 60 degrees at the cog base rail station and 44 degress at the top, with no wind to speak of!

Visibility was over 100 miles that day as well.

Two TV station transmitters and 2 FM transmitters is what I saw, but I could be wrong. One of those FM stations is 103.9 I believe.

Did you know that the power they use up there is generated by a deisel motor and has been for a long time now?

The are currently running power and fiber optic lines up along the Cog Railway side of the mountain to get those services to the top. Unknown on the proposed completion date.

Cell Sites for New Boston NH:

Wilson Hill has an eighty-seven foot mono-pole tower owned by AT&T (Cingular), approved in year 2003.
Other wireless provider coverage information is not known, but US Cellular has somewhat a fair to good signal in town, and Verizon seems to have fringe service coming in from, perhaps, Bennington and Goffstown.
One thing is for sure, you cannot hold a voice call with Verizon along Rt 13 between downtown New Boston and Goffstown!

I was very surprised to see that HAM RADIO antennas were mounted to the top of this tower. Being a ham radio operator myself, I know it's against the code of conduct for a Ham Radio Operator to profit from his hobby, so I'm hoping this guy is not making money on this deal.

All photos taken on August 20, 2007.

Located at the top of Mt Cranmore are two cell towers and some sort of communications tower.

This is really a great location for any broadcast equipment, as it has quite the Line Of Sight to the west, north west, and south west.

I never knew Mt Cranmore had trails (and a ski lift!) that leads off the East side of the mountain, wraps around to the south and then end up at the West base lodge! (Can you tell I have never skiid there my whole life. Maybe we should try it sometime!).

On Monday August 20th, the family and I, with dog in tow, hiked up the face of the mountain (that's a story for another time!!) . We had lunch near the top and then proceeded to explore the cell towers and snap off a few photos. It was a very nice day weather wise, and we crossed paths with quite a few other hikers as well as some good sized turkeys!

Photo 1 is what the tower looks like while hiking back down the access road (to the north of the peak/lodge). It's a bit of a blurry and hazy shot.

Photos 2 and 3 show the sleath pine (like that helps at such an altitude, duh!).
From top down - US Cellular, Verizon, Unicel, some wireless data service providerand lastly NEXTEL.

Photo 4 is a photo taken "in motion" - hence the burry nature of it. I thought I was stationary buy perhaps one of the kids ran into me when I took it! It shows the base shelter area - very busy with many shelters.

Photos 5 & 6 show the power panels. Most of them are clearly marked if you zoom into view them.

Comments: It looks like this tower had all the aesthetic appeal from a town initially concerned with what towers look like, but then it ended up not really mattering much in the long run. For example, some of the antenna panels (the older ones) are painted green. The newer antennas are the typical grey antenna color (no longer painted green). Also, the shaft of the tower is peeling it's brown color pretty bad and the steele color is showing through.

Located at the Ski Lodge at the top of Mt Cranmore is this raltively new flag pole utilized as a stealth cell tower for T-Mobile.

Although there was no name labled anywhere on any equipment, I'm going with a good hunch that it's T-Mobile, as from N. Conways history, they were the last wireless provider to become active here.

If anyone has any input, please let me know!
Email Me

Photo 1 shows what the ski lodge looks like while coming up to the top by foot. You can see the flag and pole behind the deck.

Photo 2 shows the base of the flag pole with the 6 moster coax cables coming out. The base is surrounded by about 6 feet of wooden fence, perhaps to keep riff raf out.
The cable going into a conduit in the ground here and runs back about 50 feet to a shelter / shack along the tree line.

Photo 3 shows the pole and roof line, and the other communications tower right behind it.

Photo 4 and 5 show the inside of the shack / shelter buidling. The rear door of the building was open, and it shows the conduits with the wire coming out and going onto the control room part of the shelter.

6 cables. Two cables per sector - two antennas per sector. Hence this is a 3 sectored site.

327 Gage Hill Road/Pelham Pentecostal Church - Site Plan Review for Proposed Telecommunication Tower for Consideration

Presented was a proposed telecommunication tower from Telecom.  He informed that Telecom operates under the brand name Suncorp.  He said they are proposing to mount their antennae within a flagpole, which would be 20’ taller than the existing 36’ extension.  He went on to say that the pole would be mounted at the rear of the addition, as to not be a focal point from the front.  He explained that the antennas would be within the fiberglass structure and the appropriate wiring running to the ground equipment will be located within a compound surrounded by a stockade fence approximated 25’x19’ from the rear of the building.  He noted they would provide appropriate landscaping.  In addition to their facilities, they will provide the area for one other carrier to locate both within the flagpole and the compound.  A coverage map was shown, which showed the gap that will be covered when the church is approved and on-air.

Cell Sites for Twin Mountain NH:

US Cellular seems to have the only consistent wireless (1X-RTT CDMA) service in this area.

It appears that Verzion is looking to expand service in this area, with Harmony Hill and a balloon test.
From the Twin Mountain Town Board meeting minutes of October 2006, they state:

Dr. Karpf continued with sharing information about cell towers, regarding the Public Hearing for Verizon Wireless which will be held November 2. He asked that the applicant be requested to have alternate sites when they come for the meeting. Lee Hallquist and Jim Covey, representing the Chamber of Commerce, were in attendance. Mr. Covey advised that the Chamber members had been polled and all were very strongly opposed to the Harmony Hill location. It was noted that Mount Washington Hotel has offered a lease option on the towers/flagpoles there, but had not yet heard back. Maryclare was asked to follow up a request for another balloon test …quot; hopefully one that will be for 24 hours.
