Weirs Beach Sprint PCS Mobile Unit Picture 1

Welcome to Sprint PCS at Weirs Beach!! As far as I am aware, this is the first time ever that a PCS carrier has installed a mobile unit at the beach. They finally realized how much revenue they were missing from the 300,000+ bikers expected each year at this Bike Week event.

Located just due east of the Weirs Beach strip is this portable unit. This picture shows the masting for the antennas. Quite impressive on it's height. It was secured by large concrete cinder blocks on the ground.

The base mobile trailer (the big white unit on the left), and the tower to the right. They placed this install in the Weirs Community Center parking lot (which was being used for this event by the NH State Police as a vehicle impound lot). We only had a couple of minutes to snap off photos as the police told us to not be there.

Weirs Beach US Cellular Mobile Unit Picture 1

Welcome again to US Cellular and their mobile unit. They have been setting up this unit for years in the Weirs Beach Community Center parking lot. This picture shows the antenna and the mobile unit below with the nice public relations banner streamed across.

Close up picture of the somewhat sectorized omnidirectional antennas. It's not the traditional 120 degree sectorization - it's a linear distribution of the antennas. Never seen this approach before. Interesting as long as it still works (which is does!).

A close up of the big munga T1 trunking cable (used for signaling and voice) between the mobile unit and the PSTN. This cable has to be at least an inch think. Now how many T1's with twisted pair can fit into a cable this big?

This part of Laconia does not have fiber runs (historical speaking), sot it makes sense that they are still using the traditional copper wiring.

A close up of the two trunks running into the Weirs Beach Community Center basement. The cable on the right running upwards towards the window is for Sprint PCS and it goes up on the roof, across the rooftop over to the Sprint PCS mobile unit.

The cable on the left runs to the US Cellular mobile unit.

Both cables run into the basement of the community center through this grate.

Some other news from The Laconia Citizen Online edition (www.citizen.com) from April 2005:

T he Zoning Board of Adjustment’s approved a special exception to place 12 antennae on a water tower under construction on Brickyard Mountain. Armed with the special exception, RCC Atlantic, which is doing business as Unicel, can now file a site plan application with the city’s Planning Board to flush mount the antennae on the upper railing of the 500,000-gallon water tank.

The tank, which resembles a lighthouse, is being built by Atom Contracting of Bedford as part of its 171-lot Akwa Vista subdivision and an agreement with the Laconia Water Commission.

Previously in March, the zoning board granted a special exception to Nextel Communications for 12 antennae on the tower. RCC Atlantic and Nextel’s antennas would be situated on the upper railing of the tank and that additional antennae could be accommodated on a second, lower railing.

He downplayed board chairman Steve Bogert’s concerns about leaving room for AT&T Wireless, saying that company is being acquired by Cingular, with which Unicel has a usage agreement for the antennae on the Akwa Vista tank.
