Cape Cod Massachusetts Cell Sites
Other quick links: Cape Cod Observation Notes, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island Notes
The wireless providers do a very good job concealing their sites on Cape Cod. Besides the regular large obvious towers that can be found along the Cape's Route 6, they make extensive use of any and all existing structures, such as water towers and existing FM radio station towers, fire lookout towers, as well as church steeples. The Cape Cod Commission, a county commission, regulates Development of Regional Impact (DRI). New towers over 35 feet in height are considered DRI's and must be reviewed by the CCC before they can apply for permits in the Towns. So the commission has helped keep towers in the right places and has encouraged co-location and alternative structure use.
| A special thanks
to J. Terry who has provided photos and information for the cell sites
in North and South Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans, Provincetown, and North
Truro. Also, a special thanks to Dave Maxon of Broadcast Signal Lab for photos of Truro and Barnstable, and great information on Cape Cod coverage. |

Updated: June 2006
Harwich Port, MA now has a monopole
located at the Harwich Port Golf Course, on Forest Street.
The two registered carriers are Cingular and Sprint.
As of June 2006, neither carrier is "live" yet on that tower.
Thanks to Keith from Cape Cod for this information!

Located in downtown Hyannis MA, just behind (just West/South West) of the Verizon Central Office is this big communications tower. It's been here for many years. Both Verizon and T-Mobile have been confirmed to be here on this tower. The third carrier is unknown as no field tests were performed. |

Located alongside RT 6 in North Wellfleet, this
is an AT&T GSM only (Cingular) and a Sprint PCS site in the form
of a functional lookout tower. http://www.firelookout.org/towers/ma/welfleet.htm The tower shown here is I believed to be the Nauset tower, just over the line in Eastham. |

Located just south of Rt 6 (Near exit 8), very close to the Cuffy's Parking Lot is this tower with at least 3 carriers present on it. Verizon Wireless is definitely one of them. The other two are unknown, but one guess would include Cingular. This tower also has a FM broadcast antenna
on the top (which is not shown on these older pictures). |
Verizon Wireless Possible: Cingular Unknown on the 3rd one (but likely Nextel) |
|
Located adjacent to the tower above is this tower with 3 wireless carriers wedged together. Cingular Wireless is definitely one of them, the other two: unknown, but my guess would be T-Mobile and Sprint PCS. |
Cingular ? Sprint ? T-Mobile |
I don't have photo's for these cell sites, but I wanted to document them anyway's in writing.
In Barnstable near exit 5 on Rt 6, south of the Sagamore Bridge, are a couple of cell antennas mounted on top of power line masts. Not too obvious, and often obscured by the tree line while traveling on Rt 6.
In Plymouth, just north of the Sagamore Bridge on Rt 3 is a power line antenna mounted on top of a pole.
Also in Plymouth, just south of Exit 5 on Rt 3 is another power line mast that holds two antenna arrays at the top.
Added 10/22/03 thanks to input from Jonathan C:
There is also a tower in Harwich just South of Route
6 between Exits 9 and
10. I think it's at least Cingular Wireless (my provider - seems to be GSM
and TDMA) what others I don't know.
Added 07/26/04 from my recent travels to the Cape:
Verizon Wireless has good coverage all over the Cape, BUT, they have a definitive RF HOLE along Rt 28 in South Yarmouth that seriously needs to be addressed. You have fair to poor coverage along Rt 28 in that section, but if you go into any buildings, you lose all service.
Added 05/24/05 regarding Falmouth and Woods Hole:
Although I have no photos from Falmouth MA, I do
know that in GENERAL, there is wireless service there for most if not all
providers. But as is true for most of the Cape, the cell sites are spread
pretty far apart, which yields larger fringe service areas. A recent report
is that Cingular GSM service is sparse in Falmouth. It is unknown at this
time if that is for one or both bands (850 and 1900Mhz).
From first hand experience, I know that Woods Hole has at least a Verizon
cell located there.
Added 11/30/06 regarding T-Mobile cell sites
on the Cape:
Bourne:
Adelphia tower @ the Bourne rotary: it's next to a water tower, and right where Canalside is supposed to be built. ATTWS/Cingular has been on that structure for 5+ years. T-Mobile has a site 1/2 mi down 28 across from Angelo Dr
Sandwich/Mashpee:
There's a site at (Rt30) near Old Snake Pond Rd, one in Mashpee on Back Rd.
Falmouth:
A site is on Firetower Rd.
Site on Spring Bars Rd (will not be built in 2006 but 2007)
Falmouth has put maps up on their website to
outline available structures for wireless providers:

August 2005: Dave Maxon of Broadcast Signal Lab told me.....
Nantucket is working with Gridcom to build
a distributed anenna system (DAS) across the island utilizing antennas on
utility poles and fiber optic cable running back to a central base station.
It was a deal between AT&T wireless (now part of Cingular Wireless),
Gridcom, and the municipal light company (which owns the poles).

All wireless providers have service on the Islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Almost all of Martha's Vineyard has service, except for the West most side near Gay Head where service is pretty much non-existent. Chillmark has service from Cingular and Verizon. That service is delivered from a utility poll that is only about 80 feet off the ground and located near the Chillmark Post Office. This tower is owned by Cingular.
With my Verizon phone, I caught service at Gay Head, but it was simply due to the altitude of Gay Head above the rest of the Island (who know's, I could have been pulling coverage from near Wood's Hole too, (I didn't put the phone into Field Test mode to find the active CDMA pilot, so I dont really know).
If you walk along the sothern most part of Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs, and look at the widow walk outlooks on top of some of the buildings, you can find some cell antennas INSIDE. Pete Ravanis' website now has photos of this specific site. Click here to see them. Thanks Pete!!
As of Aug 2003, Cingular antennas are located at:
The Tisbury water tank, the Land tower at Katama and the Wesley Hotel in
Oak Bluffs. See notes here.
It is beleieved that the Cingular's towers provide both TDMA and GSM w/GPRS
service on the Island.
Cingular is currently looking at 5 other sites on Martha's Vineyard, and they will want 10 altogether.
March 2003 notes from the Martha's Vineyard Commission minutes found online:
Cingular now has three towers on the Island, namely in Edgartown, Oak Bluffs
and Tisbury. This covers the eastern end of the Island well.
Cingular intends to add two more towers in the near future, namely to the
WMVY tower and at the airport. The other is located on Old Courthouse Road
in West Tisbury. It consists of a 60-foot flagpole-style monopole with internally
mounted antennae that is not be visible from the exterior. There is 10'
x 20' leased area at the base for equipment cabinets.
There is a fire tower in West Tisbury with some wireless companies on it. It is on "Indian Hill". There is a photo at http://www.firelookout.org/towers/ma/wtisbury.htm but it appears to have been taken before the antennas were installed.

From July 1,
2004: Cell tower regulations vary across Island, but planners consider making
changes
I went to Nantucket on 7/20/04 for the day, and did a bus tour of the island. All carriers have great service on the island, but my VZW phone did not have service on the Eastern most parts of the island. I know there is service on the west side of the island as a friend of mine has VZW and uses his phone over there regularly.
More info is needed for Nantucket, so if you know if any, please drop a note....
