Dracut Rt 495 and Rt 93 Cell Site Picture 2

Located just West / South West of the Route 495 and Route 93 interchange is this group of towers on Woods Hill in Andover.

The top photo shows an FM broadbast tower (WKLB-FM
99.5 has a cavity-back panel antenna system on top of a very tall tower that looks like a TV antenna, but in fact it is a special high power and very high performance FM antenna), and then three other communications towers, The radio tower has at least 4 wireless providers on it, the other towers are unknown.

The other two smaller towers look like non wireless phone installations. Probably lots of commercial, paging, emergency services, plus other microwave relay links.

Parris Wood writes on 5/15/03:

The tower on the far right was an Cingular Corp. microwave site, now dehorned. If not it was owned by Bell Atlantic, I'm leaning towards Cingular though.

On March 4, 2004, Peter M. helped me identify that these sites are no in Dracust but are on the Tewksbury / Andover line.

Andover PCS Tower Near 93 and 495

Located just north on Rt 93 of the route 495 interchange is this monopole. I could not figure out how to get closer without allot of headaches.

This picture was taken from near Fiske Road and the power lines on the Davis Deer Jump Reservation land.

Definitely a PCS carrier, but undetermined as to which one.

FM RADIO TOWER

AM Radio:

WCCM

WEGQ

Wireless Telephony:

T-Mobile

Cingular

Sprint PCS

Just North East of the Rt 93 and 495 interchange is this old FM radio tower which has been here for as many years as I can remember (at least since 1984). In middle to late 1990's three PCS carriers saw the opportunity and mounted their antennas.

I ran across the road to get to this site. It's located across from the Warren C. Deyermonder Memorial Field.

The first two pictures show a profile of the tower.

The 3rd and 4th pictures show a close up of the three PCS array antennas.

The 5th picture shows one of the base buildings (for Cingular).

The 6th picture shows the power meters (it also was not fenced in at all!). You can see Cingular to the far left, Omnipoint next (now T-Mobile), then the radio stations WCCM and WEGQ. There is another power meter for the BTS cabinets closer to them.

The 7th picture is of the access door sign to the base building for Cingular.

And last but not least, the last photo is of the BTS for Sprint PCS.

The telephone pole next to the power meters had telltale signs of two (or more) fiber feeds plus some old copper feeds (no picture of that, sorry!).

Parris Wood writes on 5/15/03:

One of the two stations is an FM station. AM
stations do not have antenna, they energize the whole tower as a signal radiator. In the second picture you can see the FM antennas at the very top of the tower. There are six of them at the very top. I think they are made by ERI. Just below the antenna in the second shot you can see a metal microwave dish. That's probably the STL for one of the stations. The very last pictures are of the Omnipoint cabinets. They are Ericsson GSM RBS cabinets. I think one is going to be full of batteries and another houses the actual electronics. I suspect the one with the sticker (which normally contains the site ID and Telco Circuit ID#) to be the electronics cabinet.
